· On October 16 and 17, the museum's own big-band-in-residence, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) will kick off their 25th season with a night of Afro-Cuban jazz. At its largest a member big band, or in smaller iterations, SJMO concerts feature the music and jazz masters who contributed to the development of American jazz and defined the music's mated Reading Time: 5 mins.
Afro-Cuban is an album by American jazz trumpeter Kenny first release of the album dates back to on 10" Vinyl, featuring only four tracks and having a different cover time later, Blue Note decided to add three tracks and issue a more complete LP toward the end of May (see below for details). · Three things about the music on this album struck me immediately and forcefully:  Shelly Manne’s use of timpani mallets,  the luminous trumpet work of Stu Williamson who also plays valve trombone surprisingly well and, most of all,  the plaintive wail that was so much a part of Charlie Mariano’s alto saxophone tone.
